Cut Matters!! A diamonds beauty is subjective and has always been a point of controversy. The beauty is dependent upon a number of factors such as brilliance, scintillation, fire, brightness, sparkle etc. All of these factors can be summarized as light performance. Since light performance is closely related to cut, the best scientific method available was to measure the geometry of the stone. However it has been known for decades that two diamonds of ideal proportions can have significantly different light performance or beauty.
Recent advances in optic technology provide us with an alternative approach. GemEx Systems Inc. has developed an instrument that visually records a diamonds light performance or beauty. The Brilliance Scope uses the approach of simply measuring the light that is returned through the crown of the diamond. It provides a more scientific and objective method of evaluating a diamond using simple visual images.
To evaluate a diamonds beauty you would tilt a diamond in a well-lit room or under a diamond light. What you are essentially doing by tilting a stone is changing the angle that the light enters the stone. The Brilliance Scope changes the angle that the light enters the stone by moving a light source under the diamond. It uses 6 such lighting angles to measure the stone; five positions are reflected light and one of the positions is diffused light. The software then measures the returned light in each of the five reflective light angles and evaluates the diamonds light performance. Simple graphs are used to show relative light performance. The software also allows for side by side comparisons of diamonds.

Notice how a diamond can be more thoroughly examined and accurately viewed using multiple fixed light sources instead of just one light source. The Brilliance Scope looks at the overall stone area in each of the first 5 reflectance lighting angles and determines what portion of the stone is returning bright white light from the crown. It records the percentage of the stone that returns white light.
